Chum Kiu (尋橋) — meaning “Seeking the Bridge” — is the second empty-hand form in the Wing Tsun system. It builds directly upon the foundation laid by Siu Nim Tau, introducing movement, power generation, and practical application of techniques in a dynamic context.
Chum (尋) search, seek; Kiu (橋) bridge (as in “bridging the gap” between you and the opponent). Symbolizes the moment when contact is made with the opponent — “bridging” to control, defend, and counterattack. Chum Kiu represents transition from stillness to motion and static structure to dynamic interaction.
Chum Kiu teaches the students how to move while maintaining balance and structure, develop turning power through body rotation (Yiu Ma — waist and stance coordination). Besides training bridging techniques — how to connect with and control an opponent’s arms and enhance torque-based power through rotational movements it also introduces kicking and leg techniques (the first time kicks appear in Wing Chun forms).
